This book gives voice to our pain and provides a blueprint for repossessing our earth, our bodies, and the land of our inheritance.  You may ask why this book is different from any other book.  My response is that as therapists the co-authors bring over sixty years of clinical experience in service to women.  As Christian women, for over thirty years, we have observed a tension that exists between clinicians and churches, that become barriers to inner healing for women in pain.  The tension exists for two main reasons:  first, because secular therapists lack understanding of the importance of faith as a coping mechanism and a survival tool in the face of crisis.  Secondly, because the church lacks understanding as to the role that the therapist plays in bringing about a level of awareness in our lives, that positions us to more effectively receive the Word of God.  As Christian therapists, the authors saw the need to develop a model of care that bridged the gap between our need for clinical care and our Christian faith.

This earth, our bodies are made up of mind, soul and spirit, and therefore require a model of care that will speak to every aspect of our personhood.  The model that has brought us success as therapists, as women’s advocates and agents of change, and which is woven through the pages of this book, is “The Theo-bio-psychosocial model of care.”  This model, when applied consistently within what I describe as a ‘triad of inner healing,” a relationship between the woman, her faith and her support network, bring about a sense of wholeness that allows the woman to regain control over her life, and to reconnect with her purpose and destiny.  Thus, this book brings fresh perspective to the lives of women in search of a better understanding of self and an alternative view on the way forward.

About the Authors

Dr. Sharon Apopa built a personal relationship with the Lord from the age of five years old.  Number eleven of twelve children, she was exposed at an early age to the pain and suffering of many of her siblings’ friends.  It was from these experiences that she vowed to grow up and become a social worker.  In 1981 Sharon obtained a Master’s Degree in Social Work and commenced employment with the Bermuda Department of Child and Family Services.  In the past thirty years she has worked as a guidance counselor, a clinical social worker, and is now the Executive Director of the Mid Atlantic Wellness Institute and the Clinical Director of Child and Adolescent Services.

Dr. Apopa has seen the lives of many children changed by the transforming power of the Holy Spirit.  She understands that a theo-bio-psycho-social model of care is essential for ministry to the whole individual. It is based on this model of care that she has written this book.
Sharon’s purpose in life is to create an atmosphere for lives to be transformed by the power of the Holy Spirit.  Her greatest joy in life is helping others to realize their dreams and bring their visions to fruition.  As you read this book it is her desire that your dormant hopes and dreams will be reactivated, and you will be empowered to take back everything that trauma and adversity have tried to steal from you.

Caron Laquita Assan, née Smith
September 23, 1956 – March 16, 2009

Caron was the twelfth child born to the late Evangelist Reginald Smith and the late Missionary Phyllis Virginia Pauline Smith.  God knew that her stay on the earth would be brief, so He provided her with a servant, her twin sister Sharon, to care for her from the womb to the grave.

Each of Caron’s older siblings helped develop the gifts and talents that were instilled within her before she was formed in her mother’s womb. Her love for music and passion for reading were encouraged, and Caron’s intellectual pursuits were all from the examples of her older siblings’ own passion for knowledge.

Caron’s secular training began at Prospect Primary School in 1961, and continued at Sheffield Hallam University in the UK until March 16, 2009, where she was a Doctoral Candidate.  Her academic accomplishments include becoming a State Enrolled Nurse at the Bermuda School of Nursing in 1977, and becoming a Registered Mental Nurse from the Nightingale School of Nursing in 1985.  In 1988 she earned a diploma in Supervisory Management, in 1991 she became a Certified Cognitive Behavioral Psychotherapist, and in 1992 she achieved a Certified Work-based Assessor Certification from City and Guilds.  Caron went on to achieve a double Masters in Human Resource Development and Management, induction into the Institute of Chartered Managers, and was in the midst of her Doctorate in Organizational Development.

Caron’s legacy remains today through the life of her daughter Krystl, her many siblings and their offspring, and through the words of this book that is a loving tribute to her heart to reach women who have been physically and emotionally wounded.
